When you join the Ontario Worker
Co-op Federation you automatically become a member of the
Canadian Worker Co-op Federation and the Ontario Co-operative
Association. We also have a for-profit consulting arm called Equalnomics and a
charitable foundation called the Worker Ownership Development
Foundation which does educational work to promote worker co-ops.
Receive hard to find
information on issues such as eligibility, taxation, sweat
equity, other worker co-ops etc.
The OWCF offers templates for incorporation documents, bylaws,
and organizational structure which new co-ops will find very
useful and cost saving.
Worker Co-op Fund
Access to Financing
through the Worker Co-op Fund (if all conditions met). The CWCF
offers financing to members who are either starting up as a
worker co-op, taking over an existing business or undergoing
expansion. Investments vary from $25,000 to $200,000, and for
those who successfully obtain an investment, training grants are
also available.
GroupPurchasing Programs
Through membership in
the CWCF you have access to a large co-operative buying group
sponsored by the CCA. Currently discounts on office supplies are
available. The CWCF has finalized an agreement with
the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada to allow CWCF's
members to participate in a group benefit program.
RRSP Program
Members of the CWCF have
access to the CWCF-Co-operative Trust Company's RRSP program. The
program facilitates the members of a worker co-operative to
invest the shares of their worker co-operative in the individual
members self-directed RRSP set up under the program.
Conference
Members receive discounts
on fees and travel subsidies to attend the CWCF conference. The
conference includes training workshops, worker co-op business
tours and great socializing.
Lobbying Efforts on Behalf of Worker Co-ops
The CWCF is committed to
ensuring that worker co-operatives have a level playing field
with other forms of business. For example when worker co-op
shares were not included in the RRSP regulations allowing small
business shares as eligible investments the CWCF lobbied
successfully for their inclusion.
Serve on the OWCF's Board of Directors
As a member you will have
the opportunity to seek election as a director of the OWCF and
provide leadership to the worker co-operative movement in
Ontario.
